When talking about architecture, Robert Ivy is a household name that must be mentioned. On 2nd June, the American Institute of architect’s CEO was awarded the Noel Polk Lifetime achievement award. This reward comes as such an honor to Robert Ivy because the prize is always set aside for the living Mississippi creatives with exemplary work. He is a Sewanee university graduate with a B.A in English and holds a master of architecture from Tulane University.
The architect has been honored to join a list of the Noel Polk Honorees like Morgan Freeman and Leontyne Price. According to Nancy LaForge, the Mississippi Arts and Letters (MIAL) president, Mr. Robert has been an incredible ambassador for making architecture readily available to the public. He was a part of the Jury that selected Frank Gehry a fellow architecture to design the national memorial of Eisenhower D. Dwight.
Robert Ivy started off his career as an officer in the US Navy before moving to become the chief editor at McGraw Hill Architectural Record. Under his administration, the journal became the most disseminated architectural journal worldwide. Together with his team, they garnered several awards for McGraw Hill among them the National magazine award. In addition, Robert pioneered the launch of the journals mandarin version in places like the Middle East and China.
He has been named among the only seven individuals with the title “master architect” because of his vivid explanation of design and the only one in the 21st century since the establishment of Alpha Rho Chi, the national architecture fraternity. He shares this title with people like I.M Pei and Richard Fuller. In 2017, Robert was recognized by the fay Jones school of architecture in the University of Arkansas and awarded Deans medal.
Besides creating a reputation for himself, Robert ivy has most importantly nurtured an international footprint for the American Institute of Architecture and his senior, the AIA president, Carl Elefante couldn’t be less proud of him. He congratulated him for his achievement saying he was a good brand ambassador both for the profession and AIA.
