Philanthropy is something that more and more business people and other Americans are engaging in every day. While some people give a small percentage of their earnings to charitable organizations and causes, others give a whole lot more. Betsy DeVos fits into the latter group, and she has been donating large sums of her own money to charities and nonprofit causes for years. She grew up in Holland, Michigan and learned the importance of having the freedom to attend a quality school when she was younger. After graduating from a private Christian high school, she attended Calvin College, which is a private Christian college. She received her bachelor’s degree in business economics at the college and became very interested in politics at the same time.
Betsy DeVos grew up in a wealthy family and learned how to build her own wealth as she grew older. She is now a billionaire herself, and she is also married to another billionaire, Dick DeVos. Together, the two started up the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. In 2017, on the heel of her being chosen to serve as the Secretary of Education for the United States, she decided to reveal how much she has been donating to charitable causes over the years. It was revealed that her charitable foundation has donated more than $139 million in its lifetime. While many worthy charities and causes received part of this money, the majority of it went to the educational sector.
Betsy DeVos has been an advocate for educational choice for a long time, so it makes sense that %25 of her donations would go to educational causes. Her philanthropy started out many years ago when she decided to begin supporting low income families who couldn’t afford to pay the tuition costs for their children to attend private and charter schools. It didn’t seem fair to her that some people could send their kids to a quality school while others were stuck with whatever public school matched the zip code of their home’s address. She ended up starting up a foundation that handed out scholarships to low income families but realized that she would have to work to change legislation to have a larger effect on the educational system.
Betsy DeVos eventually served on the boards of the American Education Reform Council and Children First America. Her husband and herself were also responsible for helping to pass legislation that helped to pay the tuition of charter and private schools. After having a lot of success in Michigan, she went on to support the educational rights of people from many other states including Florida, Louisiana, and Indiana. To this day, she continues to support charities and causes that work for the American people.
